Martinikerk

Martinikerkhof 3, 9712 JG Groningen

This edition of the Avondmuziek (Evening Music) series offers a rich and varied program that spans centuries of organ music, performed on both the Le Picard organ and the large organ of the Martinikerk. The evening begins on the Le Picard organ with works from the Spanish Baroque, including Miguel López’s expressive Lleno II and Juan Cabanilles’ lively Pasacalles IV. José Lidón’s Sonata de primo tono, originally written for harpsichord or trumpet stop organ, rounds out the first half.

The concert then shifts to the main organ, exploring the early musical traditions of the Low Countries. Rare medieval and Renaissance pieces—such as Asperance (an anonymous work from late 14th-century Ghent) and compositions by Rudolf and Alexander Agricola—offer a glimpse into the region’s musical heritage. Some of these are played on historic elements of the organ, including the 15th-century Octave 8’.

Contemporary contrasts follow, with two quirky and energetic miniatures—Pipe Talk and Pep Talk—from Robert Nasveld’s Organ Talk Zone (2011). Ernst Pepping’s solemn chorale prelude from Großes Orgelbuch II sets the tone for the final part of the program.

The evening concludes with a powerful and moving trio of chorale-based works: Johann Sebastian Bach’s well-known O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde Groß and Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, followed by Hugo Distler’s dramatic and inventive Toccata, Bicinium und Fuge on the same hymn tune.
