About Ubel Zuiderveld (Fritoricus Ubelski)
Ubel Zuiderveld is a Dutch journalist who has been writing about national fry and frying culture for over 35 years. In 1995, his first book Snelle Hap was published, after which he became a permanent panel member in the test series Eet Team on VARA’s Kassa that same year.
Zuiderveld, born in 1962 in Grootegast, grew up in Grootegast, Groningen, Glimmen, Winschoten, and Veendam. After training as a journalist, he worked for the Winschoter Courant, Nieuwsblad Kabelkrant, and the Nieuwsblad van het Noorden. He has published thousands of stories about Dutch frying culture and authored books such as De Frietkraam, Febo: a phenomenon (with foreword by Johan Cruijff), and the National Snack Handbook.
For his work, he has received the Golden Croquette, the LOF Award, and the Golden Snack Pin.
In recent years, he has reached a new audience on TikTok and Instagram, where as Fritoricus Ubelski he explains snack myths, frying questions, and snack history in about one minute — such as “What is a fry gun?”, “Who is Jan Patat?”, and “Which croquette does our king eat?”
