InScience on Tour: El Equipo
Cinema Forum Groningen
Nieuwe Markt 1, 9712KN Groningen GroningenThis impressive documentary shows how science became a pillar of a universal fight for human rights.
The story starts in the 1980s, when a group of Argentine students decide to help legendary forensic scientist Clyde Snow with his investigation into the desaparacidos - the thousands of people who 'disappeared' during the Argentine dictatorship in the years before.
With success, because in the decades that followed this team was called upon all over the world to dig for the truth behind massacres and mass graves, from Kurdistan to Ethiopia to the horrific El Mozoto massacre in El Salvador. Scientists everywhere manage to uncover the truth, but that is not without danger.
With discussion
In an armed conflict there are often fatalities. Who is actually responsible for the remains of the victims? What laws apply to the dead? We talk about these questions with Welmoet Wels, who conducts research into the international legal framework for the treatment of dead bodies in armed conflicts.
Welmoet Wels started working for UN peace missions after completing his master's degree in Public International Law at Leiden University. She spent several years in the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Mali, always with human rights and protection of civilians in her portfolio. Since her return from the missions, Wels has been working on her PhD research at the University of Groningen, in particular investigating the question: which violations of dead bodies constitute an international crime?
InScience Film Festival
InScience International Science Film Festival Nijmegen is one of the biggest science film festivals in Europe. The programme consists of an overview of the best science films of the year. InScience takes place every spring in Nijmegen, but the festival will also tour the entire country with the best films from the last edition. This year Groningen will have its first full InScience On Tour programme with the three outstanding movies Neutrino, Eternal You and El Equipo. After each screening, movie makers, scientists and the audience engage in a discussion to share new insights.
The Groningen InScience Festival is co-funded by the European Commission, under the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation programme, grant agreement No.101162172.
