Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell
Cinema Forum Groningen
Nieuwe Markt 1, 9712KN Groningen GroningenWhen Thien returns to the countryside of his youth, it turns out to be the beginning of a spiritual journey of (self) discovery: slow cinema in its most daring, radical form.
After his parents emigrated to the US, Thien moved from the provinces to Saigon in South Vietnam, where he earns his living as a director of wedding reports. With exceptionally long takes, slow zooms and sparse editing, debutant Thien An Pham immerses the viewer in Thien's experiences. These mainly consist of seemingly coincidental but no less meaningful encounters. This is, without any vagueness, slow cinema in its most daring, radical form.
With his contemplative film, the director won the Camera d'Or at the Cannes festival last year. After Tran An Hung's The Scent of Green Papaya, the second Vietnamese winner in thirty years.
