Welcome to the Dreamhouse
Groninger Museum
Museumeiland 1, 9711 ME GroningenWelcome to the Dreamhouse!
Wander through a life-sized dream house at the Groninger Museum. Every room – from the living room and bedroom to the garden – is filled with postmodern design from the museum’s own collection. A cinematic world unfolds where details, contrasts, colors, and humor take center stage. From scattered toys to used ashtrays, the spaces reflect real life and playfully embrace the imperfections of everyday interiors.
The Groninger Museum holds the largest museum collection of postmodern design in the Netherlands, built since the 1980s under the direction of former director Frans Haks. Welcome to the Dreamhouse! features work by influential designers such as Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass, and other members of the Memphis Group, including Michele de Lucchi, Masanori Umeda, George Sowden, and Nathalie du Pasquier. The exhibition also highlights Philippe Starck—designer of one of the museum’s pavilions— and contemporary creators like Studio Job, Maarten Baas, and Jaime Hayon, who each reinterpret postmodernism in their own distinctive way.
The exhibition is designed by Marloes & Wikke, acclaimed scenographers for theatre and opera. Their unconventional approach brings a playful, theatrical presentation to life, turning the postmodern dreamhouse into a vivid, immersive experience.
