Sappemeer in Groningen
Sappemeer is a town in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, located about 20 kilometers east of the city of Groningen. Together with Hoogezand, it forms a continuous residential area with a rich history and a wide range of amenities. Sappemeer has approximately 8,000 inhabitants.
History and Culture
Sappemeer originated in the 17th century as a peat colony along the Winschoterdiep canal. The town played an important role in peat extraction and shipping. Several historic buildings can still be found that reflect this period, including old sea captains’ houses. Sappemeer has a lively community with cultural events, sports clubs, and local shops.
Accessibility
Sappemeer is easily accessible thanks to its location along the A7 motorway and the Groningen–Nieuweschans railway line. From the city of Groningen, you can reach Sappemeer in about 20 minutes by car or train. The surrounding area is ideal for walking and cycling along the waterways and through the Groningen countryside.
