Knol's Koek celebrates 100th Anniversary and Becomes Royal Warrant Holder.

On November 22, 2024, Knol’s Koek received the prestigious title of Royal Warrant Holder, a recognition the company earned after a successful application. Founded by Egge Knol, the family-run bakery is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and has established a prominent position in the Groninger region. The title was officially handed over by Commissioner of the King René Paas, and the accompanying shield was unveiled by alderwoman Mirjam Wijnja at the bakery located at Hoendiep in Groningen.

Good to know: How to Become a Royal Warrant Holder

Becoming a Royal Warrant Holder, or Hofleverancier, is a prestigious recognition that is only awarded to companies that meet specific criteria. To receive the title, a company must have been in operation for at least 100 years, maintain financial stability, hold a prominent position in its region, and have management with an impeccable reputation. Furthermore, the company must undergo a thorough assessment to ensure it continues to meet these high standards. The title can be held for up to 25 years, after which the company must apply for renewal.

Strict Requirements for Royal Warrant Holders

Obtaining this title was not a given. In addition to being in operation for 100 years, strict criteria had to be met. The company must be financially stable, hold a prominent position in the region, and its management must have an unblemished reputation. After a thorough review, Knol’s Koek was selected for this prestigious title.

Groninger Koek with Royal Potential

While the Royal Warrant Holder title does not automatically mean that the koek will be served at the royal table, it is a recognition of the quality and craftsmanship of Knol’s Koek. Edwin Knol has previously supplied koek to Princess Margriet at (house) Het Loo. "It is somewhat known in the royal family," he says.

Royal Warrant Holder for 25 Years

Knol’s Koek can hold the title of Royal Warrant Holder for up to 25 years. After this period, the company must apply for an extension, provided they continue to meet the criteria associated with this prestigious title.
