Still very witty 1942 satire in which filmmaker Ernst Lubitsch makes fun of the Nazis. Controversial at the time because comedy was not considered appropriate for such a fraught subject.

Just before the war, a Polish theater company rehearses a satirical play about the Gestapo. After the German invasion, of course, that play must be quickly removed from the repertoire (fortunately, rehearsals for a performance of Hamlet also took place), but the acting experience and set pieces still come in handy when the actors join the resistance.  

At its premiere in 1942, not everyone was enamored with the fact that Lubitsch had turned such a fraught subject into a comedy, but it eventually became one of his most famous films.
