A Quick Local Pride Synopsis

The first official Pride in Groningen was in 2022, which attracted 8,000 visitors to the city. This was doubled the next year with 15,000 visitors. 2023 saw a ‘Pink Church’ on the Grote Markt, giving three Queer couples the chance to get married. It also boasted another first for the city – the first Pride Walk, which was completed by an estimated 2,500 people.

Then Groningen hosted the oldest Pride in the Netherlands – Roze Zaterdag - in 2024. This gave momentum to the whole event, with a lot more budget and activities throughout the city. From the return of the ‘Pink Church’ to a main stage in the Grote Markt with acts such as Willeke Alberti and Sophie Straat. There was also a Street Party in the Zwanestraat – something which has also become something of a Pride tradition.

Dragtastic Activities Across Groningen

Of course, drag was present in a big way too. There was a drag show at the Museum aan de A, and Dorothys Drag bar hosted a karaoke on the Friday before and a grand drag show on Roze Zaterdag itself. Activities were not restricted to traditional shows though. There were Drag Queens and Kings around the city, and a drag queen storytelling in the Iconic Forum building. The Grand Dame of Dorothy’s herself was to be found performing in the A-Kerk as part of a Queer church ceremony on the morning of Roze Zaterdag.

Roze Zaterdag attracted 25,000 visitors, really putting Groningen on the queer map.

What’s New for Pride Groningen 2025?

This year’s Pride promises to be bigger than ever. The week leading to Saturday 21st June is filled with exciting events. Highlights include a Drag Competition at the Social Hub on Friday, where reigning champion Madame the Queen will crown her successor.
Café de Prins returns to host the popular Zwanestraat Street Party, with a full stage lineup. The Pride Walk returns, offering a great way to explore the city as it winds from and to the Ossenmarkt.  Gaybar De Prins is a proud sponsor of PRIDE Groningen and actively participates on the board of Stichting PRIDE GRONINGEN.  There will also be an information market to connect visitors with queer organizations and community resources in Groningen.
