Autumn Events in Groningen 2024

It’s almost a week before autumn officially starts!

Can you believe it? Well, last week, it really felt like autumn with all that heavy rain. Plus, I found the first chestnut on the ground in Noorderplantsoen. And Albert Heijn already has beautiful pumpkin decorations. The pepernoten are back on the shelves. Shocking!

Indian Summer in Groningen?

Whilst navigating through the heavy rains, I briefly longed for a bit of sunshine. Although this week the temperatures are still around twenty degrees. Could we still enjoy an Indian Summer in Groningen? I’m happy to share some inspiration for the upcoming autumn period in Groningen, for the creatives, culture enthusiasts, music lovers, and party animals. Groningen is simply wonderful.

Take One Last Look Inside the Niemeijer Factory on 21st September

This Saturday, Groningen can take one last look inside the Niemeijer factory. The 200-year-old tobacco factory will be transformed into a bustling campus. You can visit on Saturday, September 21st from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. And be sure to take some great photos for us!

Stoffenspektakel in Groningen - October 9, 2024

On October 9th, you can purchase the latest fabrics and collections at Martiniplaza. Get inspired by the newest patterns and pattern books. Stock up here and you'll be set for autumn!

Did you know we also have a fabric store? After Jan Sikkes left, you can now find a wonderful selection of fabrics at Stoflab, where you can also take courses to make your own custom clothing.

Ink & Cutz Tattoo Lifestyle Event - September 21 & 22, 2024

I have to confess something, don’t I? I’m a bit afraid of anything that causes pain. For necessary medical check-ups, I often procrastinate. Reluctantly, my brave self stood in line at 't Oortje in Groningen six months ago to get my ears pierced at the age of 43. There was a little girl in front of me, already going for her second set of piercings. I initially wanted to go for ladybug studs but ended up choosing a more modest option. Small studs. Of course, I know many people love body decoration, getting tattoos or even more extreme modifications. If you're one of them, go to the Ink & Cutz Tattoo Lifestyle Event on September 21 and 22 at Martiniplaza.

Children’s Activities for Autumn Holiday in Groningen

The autumn holiday for schools starts in the south on October 19 and a week later in the north and central regions. We’ll write a separate piece about this soon, so follow our Instagram page to stay updated! Looking for local inspiration for kids during the autumn break? Boredom won’t strike if you keep an eye on the schedules of Martiniplaza, Forum Groningen, SPOT, VRIJDAG, the university museum, or Grand Theatre.  I have taken our son year after year to the bouncy castle festival at Martiniplaza and we always left exhausted. Because mom had to join in on the bouncy castle course too.

European Researchers' Night - September 27 from 7:30 PM

As it gets dark earlier, it’s nice to stay up a bit later. On Friday, September 27th, you can attend the European Researchers' Night at Forum Groningen. The four RUG Schools for Science and Society, in collaboration with Forum Groningen, are organizing this challenging science festival with over 40 program elements.

Northern Auto Show - October 5 and 6 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

On Saturday, October 5th and Sunday, October 6th, you can drool over the most beautiful and luxurious car brands at Autosalon of the North at Martiniplaza. Exclusive models: Bugatti Chiron, Audi RS6, BMW M6, and even a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. Wow, I say 'go.' But I must confess that as a woman, I do appreciate a beautiful car. If I get bored, there is also much to see in fashion, lifestyle, and gadgets.

Cultural events in Groningen during Autumn

There’s a lot to experience culturally in the coming period. Here are a few recommendations for the upcoming events:

FAITH, Club Guy & Roni - September 27, 2024

We have been fans of Club Guy & Roni for years (and not just because we’ve worked with them). This international dance company creates the most current performances and discusses current issues in society. Their performances often make you think or leave you in confusion. They frequently collaborate with Slagwerk Den Haag and Noord Nederlands Toneel. Visit the FAITH performance on Friday, September 27, 2024. The performances are also suitable for English speakers.

Carel Kraayenhof and Marietta Petkova - September 24, 2024

True music is instrumental music, said the driver who took us around North Sulawesi this summer. Since then, I’ve thought differently, because after two days of saxophone, I almost went mad! 😉 But seriously... Remember Queen Máxima’s tears during Carel Kraayenhof’s tango music? You can see him live and enjoy his bandoneon talents along with pianist Marietta Petkova. Check the link.

The film ‘Liefsteling’ - September 23, 2024 at 7:00 PM

The movie Liefsteling at Forum Groningen is about the beloved Hetty and Jeanne. Jeanne is getting increasingly worse with dementia. Yet they decide to make the most out of life. This film offers a warm portrait of love, honesty, tenderness, and the desire to keep experiencing joy in life!

Laughing Out Loud, caberet and stand -up comedy  in Groningen

The dark days are coming, so you can still enjoy some cabaret in Groningen! When vitamin D starts to run low, you can recharge with a night of laughter.

On Wednesday, October 2nd, you can go to Simplon for a Comedy Night with Tobi Kooiman, Pieter Jouke, and more! On October 16th, Javier Guzman will perform his show ‘Laatste Wissel’ at Oosterpoort in Groningen, and on October 17th, Martijn Koning will bring his show ‘Overkill’. Tickets are still available for both shows.
